The British International School MoscowThe partnership aims to establish a systematic approach towards improving standards in the British International School in Moscow (BISM).
It aims to bring about sustainable improvement in the quality of leadership and management and in the quality of both teaching and learning leading to improved achievement for pupils. The project builds on the original reviews carried out in March 2007 and runs for three years (September 2008 until July 2011). BISM comprises 8 multi-cultural schools, three in the Northern Campus, two in the Southern Campus, two in the Central Campus and one in a gated community. Two of the schools cater for pupils of secondary age, one to IGCSE level, the other to IGCSE and IB. One school operates exclusively as a Russian school for those in years 5 to 11 while the remainder deliver the English National Curriculum at Foundation Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as appropriate to the age range of their pupils; some are infant schools while others cater for both infant and junior pupils. Cambridge Education (CE) provides advice, consultancy and training (CPD) to meet the existing and developing needs of all schools in the project within a constantly changing population of teaching staff and of pupils and students. Since 2008, teaching contracts at the school have been offered for two years allowing for some continuity and embedding of training. Over the first two years of the partnership, CE colleagues worked with the SMT at BISM to develop a programme relevant to the needs as identified during the reviews of March 2007 and subsequently. To this end, all teaching staff have taken part in full day training on how to plan effectively to ensure that teaching successfully impacts on learning. In addition, primary teachers attended a day of training entitled ‘Successful Learning through Good Teaching’. A keynote address on Educational initiatives and 21st century learners was a particular highlight. All teachers have been made familiar with the importance of the Every Child Matters framework and its implications for their teaching and introduced to a range of Assessment for Learning and Motivational techniques, plus targets for success and joyning the learning both directly through training and through use of purchased resource materials. The work is focused largely on improving the quality of teaching and learning but also on increasing the ability of middle and senior managers to evaluate effectively the work of their staff. In addition, it is designed to ensure sustainable improvements in students’ achievement within the context of considerable staff and student turnover. It further provides support for those unfamiliar with the British National Curriculum.
Throughout the project there has been considerable collaboration between the General Director, Associate Headteacher and other senior staff at BISM to tailor the training programmes to address needs as drawn from the review reports of March 2007, individual school self-evaluation and development plans, schools’ data and the views of the BISM senior staff. Individual consultancy has been provided to headteachers at all schools in an effort to develop strategic thinking and systematic approaches across all Campuses. In March 2010, the work of one secondary and three primary schools was reviewed with the same work due to be carried out in the remaining schools in the spring of 2011. Cambridge Education added value
- The project has focused on outcomes designed to improve achievement and standards.
- Senior staff and middle leaders are supported in working with their colleagues in a collaborative and encouraging way when evaluating teaching and learning.
- More focused strategic thinking and development of cross-campus systems to monitor, review and evaluate ongoing work is enabling a much clear understanding of the methodologies through which consistent, transformational educational ideas are translated into productive realities for staff, pupils and students alike.
