Please note that this module has now been withdrawn and is replaced by the new course: Governance in MATs – a unique three module CPD programme for governors and trustees in MATs.

Nationwide all trusts are continuing to evolve their models and approaches through lessons learned and increased focus on the role of governance in schools. Drawing on the extensive experience of Cambridge Education gained within the academy and multi-academy trust sector we will help to develop your approach, applying established research and first-hand experience to the unique challenges of MAT structures.

Strong governance within a multi-academy trust (MAT) is one of the key drivers for effective accountability and ongoing school improvement. Yet the multi-academy model can bring a level of complexity and confusion if not developed, communicated and implemented effectively.

Who should attend?

Board directors, trustees, local governors, senior trust executives. Please be advised that if you have attended modules 1 or 4  of the Building capacity in a multi-academy trust - the critical role of the executive leaders programme, you should not book onto this module. It may, however, be of benefit to a number of your colleagues.

Why attend?

  • Understand how effective governance principles apply to MATs.
  • Learn from the emerging national lessons of other trusts.

  • Take away ideas and resources to support the development of governance within your trust.

What will it cover?

  • Core functions of effective governance and applying this as a framework to multi-academy trust governance.
  • Characteristics of effective governance and tools to support: clarity of roles and responsibilities, effective communication and relationship development.

  • Delegation and reporting: balancing the competing tensions of autonomy, centralisation and accountability.

  • Examples of policy in practice including health and safety, safeguarding and pupil premium.

  • Emerging themes of regionalisation and pooled governance across institutions.
